How do you collate unstable products for sleeve wrapping?

Keep the group controlled from the first product contact until the film and support system can hold the bundle through the tunnel and cooling route.

Stabilise the group before it reaches the film

Unstable products need a controlled arrival pattern, limited transfer gaps, correctly positioned guides and a repeatable method of forming the complete bundle. Depending on the product, that method may include a side-feed pusher, pack clamp, tray, pad or operator-controlled presentation.

Film should not be expected to correct a group that is already leaning, spreading or missing products. Observe the exact point where collation changes and address the mechanical or timing cause before adjusting seal or tunnel settings.

Find the first loss of control

  1. Run the products without film and observe arrival gaps and contact points.
  2. Mark where the first item rotates, tips, separates or climbs another product.
  3. Check transfer openings, conveyor speed differences, guide positions and pushing direction.
  4. Add only the support needed to maintain the intended group.
  5. Repeat the trial through film, tunnel, cooling and downstream handling.

Make the collation trial representative

Use production-weight products, normal surface condition and the real bundle count. Empty bottles, dry test items or hand-held groups can behave differently from filled production packs. Include start-up, a missing item, a short stop and restart so the controls and recovery method are visible.

  • Video the group before, during and after transfer.
  • Record every manual correction needed.
  • Check guides for scuffing or concentrated pressure.
  • Inspect the cooled bundle after the intended lifting method.

Why do products lose their pattern before the film?

Products lose their pattern when arrival gaps, conveyor speed changes, transfer openings, guide contact or pushing forces allow them to rotate, separate, tip or overlap.

Find the first point of movement and correct that cause. Extra film tension or tunnel heat cannot reliably repair an already disordered group.

When should a tray, pad, guide or clamp be used?

Use support when the products cannot remain in the required pattern through transfer, wrapping, shrinking, cooling and handling without unacceptable movement or damage.

Choose the lightest suitable support only after comparing tray, pad and trayless samples under the same acceptance test.

How should transfer gaps and side pressure be controlled?

Keep transfer gaps small enough to support the product and apply only enough side control to maintain orientation without scuffing, crushing or creating friction that disturbs spacing.

Check the smallest base and the widest product features, and observe the pack during starts and stops as well as continuous running.

What should a collation trial record?

Record product arrival, bundle completion, guide and pusher contact, corrections, failed groups, transfer behaviour, seal position and the cooled bundle after handling.

Use video from more than one angle and identify the exact format, product weight and line settings.

When is trayless sleeve wrapping the wrong choice?

Trayless wrapping is the wrong choice when the group cannot remain controlled, the film damages the products or the cooled bundle cannot meet the required handling duty.

A tray, pad, carton or different packaging process may provide a more reliable and testable pack.
