Film efficiency starts with a stable approved pack, not the thinnest roll
PE shrink film waste can be reduced by matching width and cut length to the real bundle, controlling overlap, preventing damaged or poorly wound rolls, shortening unstable start-up and eliminating recurring seal, tunnel and handling rejects.
A material reduction is only an improvement when the cooled bundle still passes its acceptance test. Compare usable accepted packs, total film issued and reject causes during a controlled trial rather than judging film use from nominal thickness alone.
Separate unavoidable material from process loss

Use a controlled material-reduction trial
- Establish the current approved film, settings, accepted output and reject rate.
- Change one material variable, such as width or grade, while holding the pack and process constant.
- Run the smallest, largest and highest-load formats through normal production states.
- Inspect seal, shrink, product condition, cooling and representative handling.
- Compare total film use per accepted pack and record any new reject or downtime cause.
Avoid false savings
A narrower or thinner film can increase rejects, require slower running, create handling damage or move the cost into trays and labour. Film efficiency should therefore be assessed with accepted output, changeover time and finished-bundle performance.
- Do not approve a film from one easy SKU.
- Include start-up, roll change and restart losses.
- Keep the approved roll reference and sample.
- Investigate repeated defects before reducing material.
