Use consistent terminology when comparing machines, film, tunnels, bundle formats, trials and quotations.

Plain-English definitions

Terms used in sleeve sealing and PE shrink wrapping

The same words can be used differently across plants and suppliers. Add drawings, dimensions and photographs to a quotation brief whenever a term could be interpreted in more than one way.

Sleeve sealerA machine that presents and seals film around a single product or grouped pack, normally before a shrink tunnel.
Sleeve wrapperCommon alternative term for a sleeve sealer or the wrapping section of the system.
PE filmPolyethylene shrink film used for many grouped, tray and transit packs. The exact grade, thickness and shrink behaviour must be confirmed with the film supplier and trial.
Seal bar or sealing jawThe moving or heated assembly that joins and cuts the film to create the sleeve. The exact construction and adjustment depend on the machine.
Film overlapThe amount and position at which film layers meet around the pack before or during sealing.
Film widthThe roll width selected to provide the required wrap around the actual bundle while remaining compatible with the wrapper path.
CollationThe arrangement of products into the required rows, layers or group before wrapping.
Bundle patternThe defined quantity and orientation of products in the finished group, such as rows by columns and any layers.
Tray, pad and traylessThree support approaches: a formed tray, a flat base pad or no separate base support.
Bullseye openingThe open area often visible at each side of a sleeve-wrapped pack after shrinking. The acceptable size depends on the pack requirement.
Shrink tunnelA heated conveyor enclosure that applies controlled heat and airflow so the film recovers around the pack.
Dwell timeThe time a pack spends in the effective heated zone, influenced by tunnel length and conveyor speed.
Airflow balanceThe distribution and direction of heated air around the pack. It affects how evenly different faces shrink.
Pack spacingThe gap between packs entering and travelling through the tunnel. Spacing can influence airflow and heat loading.
CoolingThe period and supported travel after heating in which the film and pack stabilise before accumulation or handling.
DischargeThe conveyor and transfer route after the tunnel, including cooling, accumulation, inspection and handover downstream.
Pack integrityThe ability of the finished bundle to retain products and withstand the agreed transfer, lifting and handling route.
ChangeoverThe controlled adjustments, parts and verification needed to move from one approved format to another.
Sample trialA test using representative products, support materials and film to determine settings and finished-pack suitability.
FATFactory acceptance testing against an agreed scope before equipment leaves the factory.
SATSite acceptance testing of the installed equipment and its site-dependent interfaces.
L-sealerA different shrink-wrapping route that creates an L-shaped seal around a product in folded film, often for individual or fully enclosed packs.
Shrink-sleeve applicatorA machine that applies a decorative or tamper-evident sleeve to an individual container. It is not the same as a grouped-pack sleeve sealer.

Use dimensions with the term

“Pack width” may mean the dimension across conveyor travel to one person and the leading dimension to another. State length, width and height against a marked product-flow arrow. For film, identify roll width, thickness, core, maximum outer diameter, unwind direction and printed registration where relevant.

When discussing output, distinguish machine cycles, packs per minute and products per minute. Record the bundle count and the conditions under which the figure is expected. For utilities, use the final electrical and pneumatic schedule rather than a generic machine-family description.
