Can one sleeve sealer run multiple pack sizes?

One machine may cover several formats when every pack fits the complete mechanical and process envelope and each changeover can be controlled and approved.

A shared machine is possible when the format range is engineered as a matrix

One sleeve sealer can often be assessed for multiple pack sizes, but the largest pack does not define every requirement. The smallest, lightest or least stable pack may determine guides, transfer gaps and collation, while another format may determine film width, tunnel aperture or load.

Create a format matrix and identify which SKU sets each boundary. Then confirm mechanical adjustment, film changes, recipes, first-off checks and accepted output for the boundary packs during a representative trial.

Control changeover as a repeatable process

  1. Select the correct film and verify roll identity.
  2. Adjust guides, pusher or conveyor settings using documented datum points.
  3. Load the correct stored settings where the machine provides recipes.
  4. Run first-off packs through the complete tunnel and cooling sequence.
  5. Release production only after the approved checks are recorded.

Know when the format range is too broad

A single machine route becomes less attractive when formats need incompatible film systems, feed directions, tunnel conditions, support methods or output levels. A second line, dedicated change parts or a different packaging technology may then provide a more controlled result than forcing every SKU through one compromise setup.

  • Do not approve a format from mechanical fit alone.
  • Include low-volume formats if they create the hardest changeover.
  • Treat a new tray, pad or film as a process change.
  • Keep the approved first-off sample or image with the format record.
