Start with the can pack format
The main decision is the finished can pack, not the machine name. A four-pack, six-pack, tray pack or larger transit pack each has different stability and tunnel requirements.
A sleeve sealer and shrink tunnel route is often considered where cans need to be held together with PE film for handling, transit or retail grouping.
Machine routes for cans
Semi-automatic sleeve sealing can be practical for lower volumes or mixed pack formats. Automatic sleeve wrapping is normally considered where the can packs are produced repeatedly and can be conveyed consistently.
Side-feed sleeve wrapping can help when cans need to be collated before wrapping. The correct route depends on how cans arrive, how they are grouped and how much manual handling is acceptable.
Avoiding common specification problems
Common issues include unstable packs, too little tunnel dwell time, incorrect film width and poor transfer between conveyors. These can be reduced by checking the product and pack data before selecting the machine.
